laundry line, 2014
Laundry lines, washing lines, clotheslines - no matter the name, these practical structures are an iconic mark of human presence in a landscape. Strung up in cities, yards, fields, balconies, and bannisters; drying racks, clotheshorse, headboard. Wood and rope and metal shapes intertwined and arranged in myriad forms all for one purpose: to dry clothing and linens that have been laundered, washed, cleaned.
This site-specific installation was inspired by the presence of an abandoned laundry line on Beech Hill Farm in Mount Desert, Maine. I utilized the structure to hang white garments stenciled with gold words that formed an ever-changing poem as the clothing moved with the wind.
